What films this site covers
Well, hopefully the title "Fantasy Films" should give you some kind of idea what to expect from this site. However the erm "Fantasy" seems to be applied to anything with a hint of the unusual or supernatural in it as well as to soft-core porn flicks (No, I don't mean "Amazons"!) and all manner of other features. The "Fantasy" of Fantasy Films is the same as that used in "Sci Fi and Fantasy" in bookshops. Specifically, the movies being reviewed are those which fall into the genre of Sword and Sorcery, these movies are most often set in the past, or a land that resembles Earth's past and feature warriors fighting against (or occasionally alongside) wizards and monsters. Please note we are only covering live action films at present.
Most Fantasy films fall into one of the following categories:
High Fantasy
As it's title suggests, this category holds films that contain both fighting and magic. Magic can be in the form of wizards or magical beasts such as dragons. These are the most spectacular of all fantasy movies but also are the hardest to get right.
Examples of this type of film include Conan the Barbarian and Lord of the Rings.
Mythological
The films in this category are similiar to high fantasy, but there origins lie in myths and legends rather than modern fiction. They are usually spectualar and compelling.
Examples of this type of film include Jason and the Argonaunts, Clash of the Titans and Excalibur.
Low Fantasy
This is swords and sorcery with most or all of the sorcery removed. Whilst a little fantastic to qualify as historical, these films are more down to earth than the above categories.
Examples include Princess Bride and Lion Man.
Fairy Tale
This type of fantasy is usually aimed at the younger audience. Typically Fairy Tales contain a great deal of magic, romance and adventure but little hand to hand combat and hardly ever decapitations.
Examples include Legend and The Nevending Story.
Future Fantasy
There are films featuring swords, magic and monsters that aren't set in the past. These I am calling future fantasies. They are set in the future from the point of view of the usual fantasy setting - so that may be 1980's America or a distant planet in the next millenium. Also included are time travelling fantasies.
Other examples of the category include the Highlander film series, Beastmaster 2 and Beowulf.
Tits & Armour
B-movie heaven! These films have a fantasy or historical setting but are more interested in showing scantily clad barbarian women bathing than following a decent plot. These are often the most (unintentionally) hilarious of fantasy films as they usually have next to no budget.
Examples include Beauty of the Barbarian and just about anything dealing with Amazons!
